COGITO: the NYC Coalition of Geospatial Information and Technology Organizations is comprised of leaders of several NYC-area and regional GIS groups including professional associations, universities, meetups and other special interest groups. It serves as the center of an organized geospatial ecosystem in NYC and is developing activities to keep its constituent members informed of GIS opportunities in the region.

COGITO aims to:

  • Serve as a bridge to geospatial practitioners, educators and learners across public, private and nonprofit sectors
  • Study and report on demographics of GIS practitioners
  • Provide a listing of geospatial resources, classes, universities, certifications
  • Explore opportunities to serve as a research hub, providing fellowship grants to researchers studying geospatial data and systems

New York City enjoys a well-connected network of geospatial and geographic leaders, professionals, students, and organizations in the NYC Region. Most already work together on a wide variety of initiatives through organizations like GISMO, the New York State GIS Association and partnered entities including local and national GIS Associations, local universities, agencies, such as NYC Emergency Management and collaborations such as the Open GeoPortal.
